SOLD Lithograph by French artist Charles Cobelle uses his characteristic Parisian style. The fantastical scene has a trio of mermaids emerging from the water, surrounded by five seahorses. The front mermaid has a trident, the left has a guitar, and the right has an overflowing seashell cornucopia. To the left of them a ship is in full sail. The right has a dock scene with birds and people strolling along the houses. A seated fiddler hovers above the docks. Thin, whimsical lines over bright blues and pinks create a spontaneous and light-hearted feel. In a gold frame with white mat. Pencil signed by artist in corner, #208/500.
About the Artist:
Charles Cobelle (1902-1994) was born Carl Edelman in Alsace-Lorraine, France. He studied at the University of Munich as well as École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, but was most impacted by his private lessons with Marc Chagall and Raoul Dufy. He lived and worked in Paris until right before World War II when he moved to Connecticut, where he would spend the rest of his life. After Dufy’s success, he achieved his own commercial success through pottery patterns, advertising illustrations, and murals.
