SOLD A mask form from the American Mask Manufacturing Co.
About the Mask Form:
Established in 1884 in Findlay, Ohio the American Mask Manufacturing Co. thrived for nearly 70 years until closing its doors in 1954 when they could no longer keep up with companies that used machines to make their masks. As the first mask manufacturing company in the United States they were founded by German immigrants, Christian Heyn and Oscar Kristen.
Their mask molds were crafted by hand to emulate animals and popular characters of the day. Some of their largest orders were making “campaign masks” of President Grover Cleveland and Benjamin Harrison, but their masks would also be seen wandering down Bourbon Street in New Orleans and as far away as Canada and Europe. Eventually they would expand their creations to include whole animals, false noses, feet, stomachs, and wigs.
The earliest masks were created by wrapping the molds in layers of moistened gauze and plaster of Paris then dried with steam heat. The characters were then painted using vegetable pigments and sprayed with wax to set the design.
Great used condition.
